Bingo Comedy Adda - Animated shorts

When the first lockdown happened in March 2020, Bingo Chips like many brands ran short of content. Previously they had licensed some of our comic strips. They commissioned us quick and short animated films.

Week by week, we came up with concepts and made them on a small budget using in-house talent for voice acting, music production and animation creating films that were limited in animation, but big on storytelling.

Although all the films were in black and white, because of the low budget, we slowly kept increasing colours in the film and decided to make the last film in full colour as a parting gift (we were actually new in animation when the films were commissioned and by the time we reached the last one, we had actually gotten quite good at it).

Let me take you through the process of one of the films, BINGE BHOOT

Step 1: Writing

The first step would be pitching all possible ideas for the given film, usually 5-6 prospective ideas, finally choosing one idea and then we will have a detailed discussion with the client on the idea. even the smallest aspect.

After this, we would make all changes to the script, bringing it up to speed. In this one, what took the longest was to get this dialogue approved – “Itna mukka maarenge moonh papeeta ho jaayega” – which was basically fictional dialogue from our ficitional web series which our main character goes crazy binge-watching.
And all of this is happening on Whatsapp because we go where our clients are most comfortable.

Finally, we close the script.

Step 2: Animatic (music+voice acting)
Now we take this and create rough storyboards, put them together with scratch dialogue and create rough cuts, over which scratch dialogues, rough sound etc is placed. For this project, we put the steps of a storyboard, story reel and animatic and combined them into one.

Step 3: Music, Voice acting
Once the animatic is approved, we close the music and voice at this point too. In this one, the voice was by Mukund Sharma, who was also a writer on this film and Shivansh Bajaj, our ex-intern and an impressive voice actor.
Music was done internally by Sumit Kumar. Though now we have a full-time professional Music Producer which gives us access to a proper studio when needed.

Step 3: Backgrounds, Animation
Backgrounds are usually simple but on this one film, they’re slightly complicated given it had walking sequences and scenes with lightning and whatnot. However, we braved through those, and by this time we had our animation team in place – in particular Manjit. Sumit and Manjit worked on the film in parallel – while Manjit worked on a shot, Sumit finished the next background.

Step 4: Finished film
